BASF Shares the History of Women in Research

BASF ranked No. 12 on The Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list in 2022.

BASF shared the history of women at the company in honor of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The history of women in research at the company did not begin until 1918. Before this, the company’s labs were only occupied by men.

Dr. Lili Wachenheim, Dr. Martha Bretschneider and Dr. Wilma Schneehagen were the first three female chemists at the company. They worked in the literature office, where they sifted through and catalogued technical literature. Dr. Emma Wolffhardt was the first BASF chemist to be given her own research area in 1951.

“Our female employees make an important contribution to the success of our team,” BASF wrote.
