Black Man Killed by Police in South Bend, Pete Buttigieg Marches with Protestors

Eric Logan, a 54-year-old father, was fatally shot by an officer responding to reports of a man breaking into cars in downtown South Bend, Ind.

According to authorities, Logan pulled out a knife and lunged at the officer, who shot him once in the abdomen and killed him. But there’s no way to know if the officer was telling the truth — he had not activated his body camera. Also, Logan was taken to the hospital in a police car rather than an ambulance, and his family wants answers.

In response to the murder, Democratic presidential candidate and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg left the campaign trail on Friday and was greeted by at least 100 protestors, including family and friends of Logan, when he landed.

The masked protesters were waving black signs reading, “Who do you call when police murder?”

“You’re running for president and you want Black people to vote for you? That’s not going to happen,” a woman shouted, according to the New York Times.

“Y’all ain’t doing a damn thing about me or my son or none of these people out here,” Logan’s mother told Buttigieg.

Oliver Davis, a Black member of the South Bend City Council at the protest, mentioned more than half a dozen incidents since Buttigieg took office in 2012 of police misconduct, some resulting in deaths.

The group had a list of 10 demands and Buttigieg responded to each one. He agreed to requesting the Department of Justice appoint an outside prosecutor but said he wouldn’t fire the police officer because that had to be done by a safety board.

After the tense back-and-forth, Buttigieg marched with the crowd of protestors to the County-City Building downtown.

A lawyer for Logan’s family told the New York Times that he plans to file a federal civil rights lawsuit against the City of South Bend and the officer involved.
