Dow’s Carrie Houtman on Sustainable Water Management

Carrie Houtman is the Director of Sustainability and Environment, Health and Safety at Dow. Dow ranked No. 15 on The Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list in 2022.

Carrie Houtman, Dow’s Director of Sustainability and Environment, Health and Safety, commented on the company’s goals for sustainable water management in celebration of World Water Day.

Fresh water supply is becoming an issue for communities and industries alike. Dow is taking action to sustainably manage water around four spheres of influence: direct operations, product offerings, supply chain and wider watershed health.

“As we drive forward our plan to decarbonize and grow, we also need to take into account two important factors as we invest — the water needed for these technologies and the impact to the ecosystem,” Houtman said. “None of the actions that we take to address carbon, biodiversity or water management should be done in a silo.”

Dow has focused its water conservation efforts on six of its key sites, but is now expanding across the entire enterprise, from supply chains to product offerings.

“As society moves forward with additional environmental priorities like carbon reduction, we need to treat water like the precious and finite resource it is and remain focused on protecting valuable ecosystems. There are very real tradeoffs, and society finds better solutions when we understand and account for this,” Houtman said. “There is a place for every person to connect to water stewardship. Just as we all depend on water, a sustainable water future depends on us.
