Mastercard to Remove PVC Plastics from Payment Cards

Mastercard ranked No. 2 on The Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list in 2022.

Mastercard is accelerating efforts to remove first-use PVC plastics from payment cards by 2028, boosting the company’s commitment to sustainability.

Starting January 1, 2028, the production of the company’s plastic payment cards will be made from sustainable materials such as recycled or bio-sourced plastics.

“We are leading and shaping our industry’s collective pursuit of a more sustainable, more environmentally conscious future,” said Ajay Bhalla, President of Cyber & Intelligence at Mastercard. “As our customers respond to increased consumer desire to make more eco-friendly choices, we are making a firm commitment to reducing our environmental footprint — for the benefit of people, planet and inclusive growth.”

Mastercard has had 300 issuers sign up for its Sustainable Card Program since its launch in 2018.
