Medtronic Encourages DEI Skills in High School Robotics Teams

Medtronic ranked No. 10 on The Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list in 2022.

Medtronic has awarded six For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) robotics teams in its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts.

FIRST is a global robotics community that helps students prepare for a future in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). FIRST “inspires young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership,” according to the organization.

One of the winning robotics teams, the East Ridge Robotics Ominous Raptors (ERRORs), were selected for building a kiosk for LGBTQ+ resources at their school. The fully-stocked kiosk catered for members of the LGBTQ+ community in STEM, containing resources about mental health and discrimination.

The winning team also held training sessions at their school educating FIRST mentors, coaches and club leaders about the LGBTQ+ community.

ERRORs received $1,500 from Medtronic.

“Medtronic has long been a supporter of FIRST, but this was the first time we’ve paired that with intentional goal-setting around inclusion and diversity,” said Matea Thomas, a program manager at the Medtronic Knowledge Center.

The Knowledge Center creates opportunities for Medtronic employees to collaborate with and mentor people in the community pursuing a career in STEM.
