Medtronic Expands LABS to Bridge Gaps in Healthcare

Medtronic ranked No. 10 on The Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list in 2022.

Medtronic is expanding its LABS program to help design the global health system of the future.

Healthcare programs similar to LABS have historically focused on specific diseases like malaria in low- and middle-income countries. However, Medtronic is broadening the scope to address a full spectrum of community health needs, including hypertension, diabetes, mental health, TB, HIV, maternal health and more.

“With over 5 billion people in these communities across the world lacking access to healthcare, we need health systems to look beyond addressing specific conditions and consider patients’ broader health needs,” said Anne Stake, Chief Strategy and Product Officer at Medtronic LABS. “It’s time to move away from the historical ‘verticalization’ of health systems.”

Since its launch in 2013, LABS has primarily focused on hypertension and diabetes.

“We realized that LABS’ strength in data-driven population health adds value to a range of different conditions,” Stake said. “It’s a pivot away from just looking at a single condition to transforming community healthcare delivery.”
