Myth Busters: Can All People with Hearing Sensitivities Read Lips?

“All people with hearing sensitivities can read lips.” Is it true? In this Myth Busters video, presented by Fair360 and the National Organization on Disability (NOD), we find out why this statement is false.

According to Margaret Ling, Program Manager of Workforce Solutions at NOD, lip reading is a skill. It’s a skill that not all people with hearing sensitivities have. The ability to read lips can be affected by:

  • Facial hair
  • Different accents
  • Proximity to the person who is speaking
  • Lighting

“This is a skill that definitely requires a lot of time and extensive practice, and it’s not always reliable,” she said.
