With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, many companies are looking into how to support employees’ mental health and wellbeing in and out of the workplace.
For KeyBank (ranked No. 18 on the 2022 Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list), the company listens to its employees and attempts to understand what they are feeling and what their needs are to find ways to further improve mental health for employees, Katie Talarico, an Employee Benefits Manager at KeyBank, said on a recent Fair360, formerly DiversityInc webinar titled “Mental Health: Redefining Wellbeing in the Workplace.”
Here’s why the company starts with listening and understanding:
“Mental health issues can present without us really realizing there’s a problem,” Talarico said. “Our main focus has been subtle signs that you need to care for your mental health and this topic was incorporated into all of our programming and communications. We showcased our broad spectrum of support, which includes assessments, screening tools, apps, counseling and treatment programs for specific needs.”
To encourage employees to take advantage of KeyBank’s mental health and wellbeing resources, Talarico said the company had to gain employee trust and interest through guest speakers or multi-channel content offerings such as podcasts, videos and webinars.
“The more you talk about it, I think the more normal it becomes, and we’ve had a tremendous focus on everything from stress, resilience, cropped-up feelings, cultivating a healthy mindset and mental health needs, and by integrating it across so many different channels, we’ve been able to normalize communication about it and drive more awareness,” Talarico said.
