US Soccer’s Megan Rapinoe Continues to Take a Stand Against Injustice, Won’t Sing the National Anthem

The defending World Cup champion U.S/ Women’s National Soccer Team continues to dominate the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Megan Rapinoe, a captain, has also made headlines for not singing the national anthem.

“I’ll probably never put my hand over my heart,” she told Yahoo! Sports in May. “I’ll probably never sing the national anthem again.”

Last week, as the national anthem played before the U.S. women’s national team took on Thailand in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the team stood in a row on the field and Rapinoe did not sing.

She’s still driven by inequality and injustice, and added that the president is “sexist,” “misogynistic,” “small-minded,” “racist” and “not a good person.”

Rapinoe was the first white athlete to kneel during the national anthem, following in the footsteps of football player Colin Kaepernick in 2016. She decided to use a different form of protest, not singing the national anthem, since the U.S. Soccer Federation passed a rule that all players must remain standing.

Fox News contributor Robert J. O’Neill tweeted, “Nice win ladies. Don’t tell me how this ends up. I don’t care.”

Another Twitter user suggested that Rapinoe be kicked out of the tournament for her lack of patriotism. People were outraged by Rapinoe’s actions, and have been questioning, “Why play for a country you hate?”

Meredith Clark, a news producer for a Netflix film “Patriots Act,” expressed how she loved Rapinoe for standing up to what she believes in.

Megan Rapinoe came out in 2012 when she was engaged to Sera Cahoone, but broke things off to be with Sue Bird. Sue Bird is a professional basketball player for the Seattle Storm in the WNBA. She is very involved with LGBT and is the only openly gay woman to pose for Sports Illustrated swimsuit.
