WorldPride in New York City to Be One of the Biggest LGBT Gatherings Worldwide

WorldPride 2019 is attracting around four million people to New York City this week, the place considered around the world as a haven for LGBTQ people. This year’s WorldPride is expected to be one of the largest LGBTQ gatherings in the world, organizers and officials told the New York Times.

As well as celebrating Pride, people are using the festival to come out to friends and family back home.

There has been plenty for people to do and see during the monthlong celebration through June. It all culminates with the Sunday Pride March, which runs down Fifth Avenue, starting at 26th Street. It then makes a turn at Eighth Street toward Greenwich Village and will head up Seventh Avenue past the Stonewall Inn, ending at 23rd Street.

The Sunday Pride March is expected to be the month’s largest march yet. On Tuesday, the police commissioner James P O’Neill told the Times that 80,000 more marchers and 42 more floats than last year would be on an extended route that is 2.5 miles.

Approximately 150,000 marchers and more than 160 floats featuring the cast of “Pose,” Andy Cohen, the host of Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live,” and same-sex couples from the Supreme Court case against California’s Proposition 8, which limited marriage to a man and a woman, will be at the main march.

Despite the current administration’s efforts to disenfranchise and intimidate LGBTQ people, they, along with their allies, are participating en masse in June’s events.

Some are planning to march in a different parade where police are not welcome. The alternative Pride parade, called the Queer Liberation March, will not have a police presence around the event in a show of solidarity for those who have been mistreated by the authorities.
