Nelson Mandela was a giant of the 20th century whose human-rights vision still holds value in the new century.
I first heard about Mandela in 1960. The old-timers in the American civil-rights movement, including my dad, spoke of him with respect, admiring this young lawyer who assumed control of the military wing of the African National Congress on the heels of the Sharpeville Massacre.
