A 57-year-old Indian man visiting his son in Alabama has been left temporarily paralyzed and with fused vertebrae after being roughed up by local police.
Sureshbhai Patel came to the United States to help his son and daughter in-law care for a new baby. He was on a walk last Friday when he was injured by a Madison, Alabama, police officer. At the hospital, he was unable to move his legs and had limited motion in his arms. Because of swelling of the spine, doctors had to fuse two vertebrae. Patel reportedly can now move his right leg a bit and raise both arms, but his left leg remains paralyzed and he cannot make a fist.
