Southern Company Partners to Build a Smart Neighborhood in Chicagoland

Southern Company ranked No. 24 on the Fair360 Top 50 Companies for Diversity list in 2023.

Southern Company has partnered with its subsidiary Nicor Gas and Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity to create a Smart Neighborhood in Aurora, Illinois.

Smart Neighborhood is a trademarked brand of Southern Company, aiming to advance energy technologies that work together as a part of an affordable, reliable clean energy economy.

“Nicor Gas has always been committed to giving back to our community, and this neighborhood is an extremely powerful symbol of that commitment. Through this project, we not only demonstrate the important role that we play in advancing Illinois’ clean energy goals, but we put on display how dual energy solutions can create affordable, sustainable solutions for customers,” said Meena Beyers, Vice President of Community and Business Development at Nicor Gas. “Habitat for Humanity is a dream partner that shares the same values in providing first-time homebuyers an affordable, resilient, sustainable future.”

The Smart Neighborhood communities are designed to be carbon-neutral and achieve net zero. Smart homes will be offered to first-time homebuyers, emphasizing resiliency and affordability.

The 17 homes will have solar panels, battery storage, a smart electric panel, insulating concrete form walls, spray foam, energy-efficient windows, an energy recovery ventilation unit and LED lighting.
