Humana on Increasing Diversity Among Healthcare Providers

Meet Carole Gescheidle, Co-President of Humana’s Native American and Indigenous Network Resource Group.

Carole’s mother, Mary, was born and raised on the Menominee Reservation in Wisconsin and grew up experiencing racism. Mary became convinced something was wrong during her pregnancy with Carole’s sister. Her doctor ignored her concerns about potential pregnancy complications, telling Mary everything was fine, when in fact Carole’s sister was born with a cognitive disability.

“I hear this from a lot of Native Americans that it is hard sometimes to be the one always educating people and pushing. Sometimes we just need help and support from others, we appreciate that. So, I think if you can surround yourself with people that are going to help give you strength, that’s important,” says Carole. “If you can see a health provider who looks like you, who is like you, that’s going to go a long way.”
