Northwell Health Provides Relief to Victims of Dominican Republic Explosion

Northwell Health is a Fair360 Top 50 Hall of Fame company.

Northwell Health deployed its Center for Global Health (CGH) and experts from its Regional Burn Center to aid those affected by the explosion in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic.

The CGH sent a team of burn specialists to aid in treating the complex injuries resulting from the explosion and ensuing fire.

Kimlyn Long, MD, Associate Director of the Regional Burn Center at Staten Island University Hospital, leads a team from the Regional Burn Center to provide specialized care, perform consultations and offer guidance on burn injury management.

The team also deployed Tele-burn, a virtual unit to offer consultations with additional burn specialists based in New York.

“Historically, Northwell is not a boots-on-the-ground relief agency; but we continue to find new ways to augment care to alleviate some of the burdens of access to advance specialists and overstretched resources for our partners during these disaster-scale events,” said Eric Cioe Peña, MD, Vice President of the CGH. “Northwell is one of the most ethnically diverse organizations, serving the most diverse communities in the world, so there’s natural motivation for our team members to mobilize to assist their countrymen outside of the U.S.”
