Sysco’s Purpose — connecting the world to share food and care for one another — isn’t just a collection of words; it guides us in all that we do. We bring our Purpose to life each day through our commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. In prioritizing the work of DEI, we are building a business that offers everyone a seat and voice at our table.

However, our commitment to inclusion extends beyond the walls of our business and into all of the communities we serve. With this in mind, Sysco joined 173 U.S. companies earlier this year in signing a letter urging Congress to pass the Respect for Marriage Act — legislation requiring the U.S. federal government to recognize the validity of same-sex marriages.

While I am thrilled that Congress has passed the Act, the news has stirred mixed emotions. I’m excited about this progress — it’s long overdue. Still, the need for such an Act also highlights the ongoing obstacles faced by the LGBTQ+ community in pursuing an inclusive and equitable society. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but Congress’ passing of this legislation reflects our progress as a country.

While there is a long road ahead, I join our LGBTQ+ community and colleagues in celebrating this critical milestone.
