When we think about a new year, and resolutions, we often fast forward to the future, to the possibilities that lie ahead.
But it’s just as important to make sure we are present in the moments, and that we take the time to reflect on their meaning, because they provide the fuel for our growth.
I was struck by this need to take in the moment when I had the privilege last month of speaking at American University’s fall commencement ceremonies. College graduation marks a defining moment in many people’s lives. It’s a “before” and “after” point along the journey, and there are many others that we commonly share.
The question is, what happens after the moment? How is that moment accelerating you forward? How do you make it meaningful, and not just “what happened last Thursday?”
That’s what we should have in mind while heading into this new year: How will you operate with intentionality that you can link back to the work, the preparation, you put into making that moment happen? As you go forward into 2023 and beyond, acknowledge the moments: The day you get that promotion. Celebrating birth. Or mourning death.
