Mastercard on Tackling First-Use Plastic Cards

Mastercard ranked No. 1 on the Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list in 2023.

Mastercard has shared its efforts to make payment cards more sustainable.

Most payment cards are made with first-use plastics like PVC that will not break down and decompose. The cards are also difficult to recycle because of the embedded metals and other materials.

Starting in 2028, Mastercard will require the use of sustainable materials in all new payment cards. The company is also encouraging the shift to digital payments, including its Digital First card program in which cardholders can opt out of a physical card entirely.

The company also offers a card recycling program. Cardholders can drop off their expired cards to be shredded. The waste is then shipped to a recycling partner and turned into pellets and powders to be used in other products.
