People with Disabilities (PwD) are continually underrepresented in the workforce. Companies often fail to prioritize a sense of belonging for employees with disabilities.
To change this, organizations need leadership buy-in. It’s also essential that allies step forward to help drive changes in talent development and management of employees with disabilities.
This session features several experts at organizations who have moved the needle on disability allyship. They shared how they recruit, promote and retain people with disabilities within their organization.
Highlights from the Session
“We have a kaizen culture, which is continuous improvement, and that’s a mentality of always striving to figure out how we can do things better, how we can continuously improve. I also want to stress that our goal is to create an inclusive environment for all of our employees. The attention to creating a more inclusive workplace where people with disabilities and employees with disabilities is evident in our practices from the very beginning stages.” —Candice Nash, Diversity & Inclusion Manager at Toyota North America
“It is about a culture of accommodation. It is about a culture where folks are ready, willing and able to put their hand up when they have these situations. Part of what we try to work through is almost an etiquette if you will, to make sure that we are creating the safest space possible for folks to actually access these tools — caregivers, folks with disabilities, temporary or long term. We can deal with the tools, but we have to create a place where folks feel able and willing. This is not going to be something that folks need to be afraid to ask for, rather something that they should know that they’re entitled to.” —Juan Otero, Senior Vice President, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Comcast Corporation
